2023/24 Presidents Report
2023/24 SPRMHA Presidents Report: Craig Jones
Welcome everyone.
As we wrap up another year in hockey this is always a great chance to look back on another successful season as well as look forward to next year.
Our numbers continue to grow in SPRMHA with a total of 470. Our largest registration over the last five years! As Charlottetown and its surrounding areas continue to grow population wise our hope is to continue to offer a first class minor hockey experience for all of our members as the years go on so that our association continues to grow.
We hosted teams of all ages and development levels from an introduction to hockey at U7 to U18 AAA.
All of our players were given the opportunity to play hockey with their friends, make new friends and develop skills that will serve them outside of minor hockey.
This opportunity can only be offered in thanks to the thousands of hours that our SPRMHA volunteers put in day in day out before, during and after the hockey season.
Managers, Coaches, Game Clock Operators, Tournament Volunteers, Tournament Organizers. The list goes on and on and with out these people giving up their time the hockey season just doesn’t happen.
Our SPRMHA Teams continue to have success on the Tournament stage and Provincial Stage. This year the
This year SPRMHA hosted one Provincial Championship. The U13 AA cohosted with CMHA and the The tournament was very successful. Thank you to the volunteers who helped make both a success.
SPRMHA also played host to the Annual Early Bird tournament and Co-Hosted the Annual George Trainor tournament with CMHA.
Thank you goes out to those volunteers for pulling off two very successful tournaments. These tournaments not only allow our association to showcase our great organization but also contribute to our associations revenues.
A special thank you to Wade Lewis who will be stepping down as the Early Bird Chair. Your efforts to put on a successful early season hockey tournament that welcomes teams from all over the Maritimes is appreciated and we wish you all the best.
Thank you to all of the sponsors that sponsored individual players, teams and tournaments.
Thank you to Chuckies Sports Excellence . Chuckies continues to be the title sponsor for the Early Bird Tournament.
Hi 5 For Kids continues to be a valuable fundraiser for SPRMHA. This year they contributed $22,993 to the association. SPRMHA receives 20% of sales from any tickets sold at the Esson on the Brackley Round About and Chuckies Sports Excellence.
I would like to thank Domino’s Pizza for partnering with SPRMHA again this season as Title Sponsor of the SPRMHA Team of the week. Dominoes sponsored team pizza parties each week of the hockey season. Thank you.
A thank you the staff of Cody Banks Arena, Bell Aliant Center, East Link Centre and Morell Arena for their support and contributions to a successful year.
SPRMHA made a commitment to developing our players and coaches. We partnered with Andrews Hockey to put on our pre-season conditioning camps and run player and goalie development throughout the season. Andrews also offered a coaching development coarse.
SPRMHA hopes to continue on and improve the development program for all of our players and coaches in future seasons. It should be noted that this is always a challenge due to the limitations of ice availability.
This year we offered a new program to develop the next generation of minor hockey coaches with the first ever “Grass Roots Coaching Program”. The Grass Roots coaching program was made available to 2nd and 3rd year U18 players in SPRMHA. This season we had 5 players volunteer their time and were partnered with 4 teams in our association. We look forward to this program continuing on for future seasons.
Also, this year we also started the SPRMHA Student Bursary. SPRMHA will award a $1000 bursary to a female and male player in the association continuing on to post secondary school. This season we had 7 submissions and will be reviewing and announcing the winners in June.
Finally I would like to thank the SPRMHA Executive Board. We have amazing volunteers on our board that represent all levels of minor hockey. This dedicated group of volunteers put in hundreds of hours every season to do their best to ensure a successful hockey season for all of our players.
A special thank you to two of our board members who are retiring from their positions.
Wade Lewis who will be stepping down as our U18 Director. Wade has been volunteering with SPRHMA for years as a coach, director and tournament organizer. My own son has been lucky enough to have Wade as a coach and I personally know the time and effort he puts in.
Wade; thank you for your efforts.
And finally, a thank you to John O’Brien our Treasurer and Ice Coordinator. John has served on the SPRMHA board since 2001. Over the last 23 years John has been invaluable day in and day out to ensuring the success of minor hockey in the SPRMHA. John thank you for your dedication.
