***REMINDER*** SPRMHA Membership Survey 2018

2018-08-13

As many of you are aware, 2017-18 marked the first season in which SPRMHA and CMHA offered combined teams at the Bantam AA, Bantam AAA, Midget AA, and Midget AAA levels under the Central Attack name.  The Central Attack model was implemented to allow players in Bantam and Midget at the A, AA and AAA levels the opportunity to play on competitive teams while at the same time providing players at the lower age groups quality teams on which they can strive to participate.  In this era of sports specialization at a young age, it is crucial for player retention that we have competitive, quality teams at all age groups and levels.

In an effort to maintain a strong organization, the SPRMHA Executive reviews its entire program each year.  As part of that review, the Executive is committed to reviewing the inaugural Central Attack season and discussing what would be best for SPRMHA teams at other age groups moving forward.  In order to have a fulsome discussion, the Executive felt it was important to gather input and advice from the SPRMHA membership before these discussions occur.

It is SPRMHA’s goal to have teams available for players of all age groups and at all skill levels that will enable each player to improve his or her skills and knowledge of hockey while emphasizing good sportsmanship and citizenship and contribute to a strong minor hockey association.  To that end. SPRMHA offers strong Pre-novice and Novice programs as well as skills development opportunities that allow players to begin developing a strong set of hockey skills at a young age that will serve them well as they move through their minor hockey careers.

Long-term recruitment and retention is an area of particular interest with the proper balance of A, AA and AAA teams being very important in the success and long-term viability of any minor hockey association. As a means of understanding where SPRMHA stands with regard to registration numbers across the province, here are the 2018 registration numbers for each region for each birth year.

With the exception of Summerside and Charlottetown, SPRMHA’s stand alone numbers are lower than other regions.  The Association must determine if the current numbers in comparison to other regions are conducive to the long-term sustainability of hockey in the Sherwood zone using the current model or if a new model should be considered.

SPRMHA players, depending on age group, currently play under one of two models:
1) SPRMHA-only Model  In this model, all AAA and AA teams are made up of SPRMHA players only and are hosted by  SPRMHA.

2) Central Attack  Model In this model, AAA and AA teams are made up of a combination of SPRMHA and CMHA players.  The teams are hosted by either SPRMHA or CMHA. The hosting duties are split evenly depending on the number of teams.

In order to gather input and feedback, the SPRMHA Executive will be asking that the membership complete a survey during the 2018-19 registration.  As an incentive to complete the survey, a draw for two free registrations will be held - one for those in the Pre-Novice to PeeWee age groups and one for the Bantam and Midget age groups.  In order to keep the responses anonymous, the ballots for the draw will be submitted separately from the completed surveys.

We look forward to your feedback.

SPRMHA Executive
